One model, several analyses working together
Groundwater, stress, deformation and stability interact. GeoStudio lets one analysis feed the next in the same project file.
Seepage into stability
Finite element pore-water pressures from the seepage model drive the slope stability analysis, so you see how changing groundwater changes the factor of safety.
Available in: 2D Advanced and up; SEEP3D into SLOPE3D in 3D Advanced
Stress into stability
Finite element stresses give a stress-based stability check and strength reduction, alongside coupled consolidation and deformation.
Available in: 2D Ultimate and 2D WorkSuite
Shaking into deformation
Dynamic loading and excess pore pressures from an earthquake feed a Newmark deformation analysis of the slope.
Available in: 2D Ultimate and 2D WorkSuite
Geology into analysis
Geological model volumes, background meshes and cross-sections come in from Leapfrog, with data managed and versioned in Seequent Central.
Available in: GeoStudio 2D and 3D, with 3D import of Leapfrog models

Starting editions are our general suggestion. We confirm the right one once we understand your project.
When a cross-section is enough, and when it is not
Stay in 2D
When a two-dimensional section reasonably represents the ground.
- Long embankments and earth dams
- Simple and complex slopes
- Excavations and retaining systems
- Groundwater seepage and foundation studies
- Soil stress and deformation
- Any site a cross-section represents well
Move to 3D
When simplifying to 2D cannot represent the site properly.
- Complex topography
- Irregular geological boundaries and variable layers
- Three-dimensional failure surfaces
- Spatial groundwater conditions
- Asymmetrical loading
- Three-dimensional anchors, soil nails, piles and reinforcement
Geotechnical Analysis WorkSuites pair GeoStudio with PLAXIS Ultimate: 2D Ultimate with PLAXIS 2D, or 3D Advanced with PLAXIS 3D.

What buyers ask us about GeoStudio
What is GeoStudio?
GeoStudio is geotechnical analysis software from Seequent, the subsurface software company within Bentley Systems. It analyses slope stability, groundwater seepage, stress and deformation, and earthquake response in soil and rock.
What is the difference between GeoStudio 2D, 2D Advanced and 2D Ultimate?
GeoStudio 2D includes SLOPE/W for slope stability. 2D Advanced adds SEEP/W for groundwater seepage. 2D Ultimate adds SIGMA/W for stress and deformation and QUAKE/W for earthquake and dynamic loading.
What is in a Geotechnical Analysis WorkSuite?
The 2D WorkSuite combines GeoStudio 2D Ultimate with PLAXIS 2D Ultimate. The 3D WorkSuite combines GeoStudio 3D Advanced with PLAXIS 3D Ultimate.
Does GeoStudio 3D include seepage analysis?
GeoStudio 3D includes SLOPE3D for 3D slope stability. For 3D groundwater seepage you need GeoStudio 3D Advanced, which adds SEEP3D.
Which limit equilibrium methods does SLOPE/W use?
SLOPE/W offers an extensive range of limit equilibrium methods, including Morgenstern-Price and Spencer, with a full range of slip surface search and optimisation techniques.
Can GeoStudio analyse earthquakes and liquefaction?
Yes. QUAKE/W, in GeoStudio 2D Ultimate and the 2D WorkSuite, analyses earthquake liquefaction and dynamic loading, and SLOPE/W in Ultimate adds Newmark deformation analysis.
Can seepage results feed into slope stability?
Yes. Finite element pore-water pressures from SEEP/W or SEEP3D can be used directly in the SLOPE/W or SLOPE3D stability analysis.
When should we use 3D instead of 2D?
When a cross-section cannot represent the site: complex topography, irregular geology, three-dimensional failure surfaces, spatial groundwater, asymmetrical loading or 3D reinforcement.
Can GeoStudio use our Leapfrog geological models?
Yes. GeoStudio integrates with Leapfrog and Seequent Central, and GeoStudio 3D can import geological model volumes, background meshes and cross-sections from Leapfrog.
Is technical support included?
Yes. Technical support is included with the purchase of a GeoStudio licence, and the GeoStudio Support Portal answers common questions.
Where can our team learn GeoStudio?
Through the Seequent Learning Portal, which needs a free Seequent ID. It has courses, example files and product manuals, along with webinars and how-to guides.
Should we choose GeoStudio or PLAXIS?
Both are Bentley geotechnical tools and we supply both, separately or together in a WorkSuite. Tell us the ground problem you need to solve and we will recommend the right one.
